âComing to bed?â Sara asked.
âIn a moment,â Axton said. âGo ahead.â
Axton stood back from the bonfire, watching Fae and the two twins dancing by the fire. The girls were trying to convince Bullock to join them, saying something about his dancing prowess.
Jaxon sat on a nearby log, appearing relaxed and content to watch his friends. Lost in a serene daze, he didnât notice Axton approach and take a seat next to him. Startled at first, Jaxon quickly recognized his mentor and a look of familiarity appeared in his eyes. Axton placed a reassuring palm on Jaxonâs knee, wanting to provide support even if the boy likely didnât need it.
âSo, you ready for your day tomorrow?â Axton asked.
Jaxon looked at his friends dancing and smiled.
âI am.â
âThatâs good to hear, lad.â
Axton followed Jaxonâs gaze over to where Fae was dancing by the fire. âWhat about Fae? Is she ready for tomorrow?â Jaxon furrowed his brows, revealing his concern.
âHow do you think she will do?â Axon asked.
He unintentionally let a note of concern carry on his voice. It seemed to surprise Jaxon as he turned to stare back at Axton.
âI think sheâll be good,â Jaxon said. âI know she is capable enough that she should have nothing to fear.â He paused for only a moment. âBut⦠Iâm certain something is bothering her, or she is afraid. I donât know why, though; she may not even understand it herself.â
âHmm.â Axtonâs reply was non-verbal, but his emotion was thinly veiled within it.
âYou care, donât you? You care about her and how she does,â Jaxon said.
Axton had over the years realized he, the chieftain of the clan, did indeed have one he cared for specifically. Jaxon had somehow noticed, too.
âAye lad, you got me. I was the one that found her, saw the potential in her, and brought her into our clan.â
A slight smile grew on his face as he looked on to watch her dancing in the firelight; she had an amazing grace to her while also having great strength.
âI watch over her from time to time as a father might do, and I have been immensely proud of how much she has grown. The five of you have helped each other grow much over the years. I will be there to see you both off tomorrow, but as Bao and Brakan will be there wishing you well and proud to see you come back after your time away, I will do the same for Fae, and my heart will feel pride when she returns.â
Jaxon seemed to understand. He smiled again, clapped a hand on the larger manâs shoulder.
âShe will come back, I know it. We both will.â
âAye, I know you both will, lad. It is natural for a father to feel a tinge of worry, but you are right, and I will not dwell on it. I just wanted to come over and make sure she was in good spirits. You will both need your strength and your wits about you.â
